No Escape – Nury Turkel
Shocking to find out how the Chinese government is persecuting Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in China in their own country. Stories about concentration camps, abuse and dehumanization, and the history behind the current situation.
I have grown a new sense of respect for the people who are able to escape these regimes and fight from abroad. Not only do they leave family behind, but they also have to see their family being instrumentalized to torture them. I don’t think anybody voluntarily wants to do that, but is forced to if they want to have a shot at improving the situation for their people.
In times in which Europe seems to warm up more to China, it’s good to remember that they are still actively doing things we have vowed not to let be repeated.
The Wayfinder – Daniel Slack-Smith
I had no clue how the UAE came to happen, and the history behind the key figure behind it was fascinating. This short book does leave the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan in a positive light, and does not explore his controversies in much detail.
But that he was, for so many years, such a loved person wherever he ruled is a sign that he did a lot of things right. He seemed to have ruled with the people in mind, which is not a given. We remember the bad and extremist rulers around the world, but it’s good to remember that there have also been well-intentioned ones in every region.
We can’t loose hope in good people.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd – Agatha Christie
Another Poirot classic. I take some pride in having the right suspicion at the middle of the book. I enjoyed it, a good light summer murder mystery.
